Summer Reading

Today was errand day…BORING, unless you have a day like the boy in When Dinosaurs Came With Everything, by Elise Broach. Unfortunately for the kids, our day was not like his…the dentist appointments did not reward us with a Brontosaurus afterwards, but a toothbrush, the book drop off at Baby Love Shoppe https://www.facebook.com/thebabyloveshoppe did not provide a Pterodactyl, but a unique puppy backpack for Leo, and the post office visit left us with two envelopes instead of a Triceratops. In lieu of our ‘boring’ day, I thought I would spice up the post with a few recommendation for summer reading.

The children’s list is composed from my two pseudo-nieces (Caylin and Gracen), Claire, and Leo:

1. Caylin, age 9, recommends Tooth Trouble by Jane Clarke. She likes it “because I like walruses and Wilbur, especially.  He is so funny. ‘I don’t WANNA go to the dentist’ ” she yelled in unison with her sister, Gracen.

2. Gracen, sister to Caylin, age 6, recommends any book in the Puppy Place series. Her favorite one is about a dog named Medal who like trophies. She thinks anyone who likes puppies should read it.

3. Claire, also 6, really enjoys the book, Penny, by Jane E. Gerver. “Sometimes you get to go to the barn in the summer and ride horses,” she said, which is quite comical since we don’t own a horse or a barn.

4. Leo (age 3) loves firetruck books because “when someone gets dead the ambulance saves you.” He also loves the classic, Caps for Sale, thanks to his buddy, Salim.

5. Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed by Mo Willems makes my kids laugh every time we read it.

6. The Invisible String by Patrice Karst is great for families with loved ones overseas, or far away…

7. My Sister Ate One Hare by  Bill Grossman was full of fun at the Flint Farmer’s Market Story Time.

8. Corduroy by Don Freeman was a unanimous favorite by all four kids tonight!

9. Pink Princess Rules the School by Alyssa Crowne was a fan favorite of the two youngest girls.

10. And finally, the lone recommendation from my dear husband (who has recently become a reader) is Adam Mansbach’s, Go the F*!# to Sleep, free on Audible (via Itunes) and read by Samuel L. Jackson http://www.audible.com . It is definitely not for children.

I will save the rest of my adult summer selections for the next dull errand day. Until then, wish for a day when dinosaurs come with everything, and 4 kids sleep peacefully through the night (or one at least!).

Flint Farmer’s Market!

Mr. Racecar Guy and Grass People

Today was our first Story Time with Ms. Hope at A Bit of Earth http://www.facebook.com/pages/A-Bit-of-Earth/136228629768277 in the Farmer’s Market.  She was enthusiastic and patient with all the kids, including the hyper ones and my fussy lil’ Leo.  We heard an array of stories including Claire’s favorite, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and Leo’s favorite of the day, My Little Sister Ate One Hare.  Claire said, “That book is too gross for me!  She ate worms, bats, and snakes! Ew.”  The kids also sang a few songs like Wheels on the Bus, and we met the “Big Giant Spider” instead of the itsy-bitsy one.  Then we made a creative, hairy plant-man. Claire named hers Grass People and Leo calls his, Racecar Guy.  They are adorable!  This activity was free for everyone, and A Bit of Earth has the most amazing products in their booth at the market.  Last week we bought fishing pole marshmallow turners, a homemade refurbished journal, Power Rangers board book, and Black Beauty chapter book.  This week Claire lent Leo a dollar because his Corduroy book was $2.00 and he only had $1.00.  She bought Curious George for $1.00.  Today we also visited the bakery at the north end of the market.  The kids shared a chocolate muffin and butter croissant.  I tasted both and they were phenomenal!  They each had a juice, so the total was $4.90.  Not too bad for taking home mommy food for later!  The croissant took me to Paris at 16 with my mom.  We survived on bread and cheese alone!

After saying another tearful adieu to our friends, we shopped the fruit and veggie stations along the exterior of the market.  Firm Roma tomatoes, fresh crunchy asparagus (on sale 3 bunches for $5), strawberries from the kids’ favorite Vassar farmer, and thick sweet corn were our overall purchases. We took bags of our own to save on plastic, and both kids also used their own money to buy a choice fruit or veggie (Leo chose strawberries and Claire bought corn).  I learned from our farming friends in Northville that asparagus can be frozen and it is good chopped up and cooked in spaghetti sauce (plus the kids will never know they are eating it!).  Each time I visit the market I am in awe of the beauty, promise, and love Flint holds.

Fun, Free, (in)Flint…and Beyond

"I jus wanna wead, mom!"

I have finally decided what to blog. Many writers struggle with “Writer’s Block,” and I have sure suffered from it for nearly a year. I have written another children’s story, but am planning on turning it into a chapter book. In the meantime I want to share my summer adventures with you! As a teacher I am blessed to have 3 months off with my children. Since my husband works long hours, it is usually just the three of us until 6 or 7 in the evening. We manage to accomplish a lot each day, all while having as much fun together as possible (and on as small of a budget as I can manage, too!). Today we traveled fifteen minutes to the Genesee Township Johnson Memorial Library. We met friends there for “Classroom Critters” and were able to learn about a blue tongue lizard, a chinchilla, and few very large snakes. Mr. Paul was very humorous for the adults and even named his python, Monty. He also educated the children with the balance of love and authority that only pre-school teachers can! We learned the blue tongue lizard smells with his tongue and feels like a basketball. Leo did not want to sit still for the other reptiles, but Claire had a lot of fun listening and touching them with her friends! “I jus wanna wead,” was Leo’s mantra, so we went into the other section of the library and read. Then we signed up for the summer reading program which is also free and very exciting for all ages. http://www.thegdl.org/
And all this cost us just the gas money for our drive…until we decided to walk across the street to the dreadful golden arches. I spent $11.00 on the three of us, and then we spent an hour playing with our friends in the Playland. The service was terrible there though. We waited entirely too long for “fast food” with 5 kids!
After tearful hugs and kisses, we piled into the Nissan. I mentioned a fun surprise earlier…and both kids held me to it! I drove them through Bluegill Boat Launch because my mom and dad used to ride me through there in a bike carrier when I was little. The kids loved the storytime through the beautiful, fragrant park, and I loved imagining my parents with their two babies on a beautiful bicycle ride. http://www.michigan.org/Property/Detail.aspx?p=B12994

Back to Pages Bookstore with book #2

Just thinking back to our first signing a little over a year ago. We weren’t sure what to expect, and were truly blessed with the environment at Pages, and overall support from family and friends. I was surprised to see a few friends, family members, and even former Brown City students (with their baby) show up last fall. With that being said, we are planning a family and friends (thank-you) signing for December, but wanted to head back to Pages Bookstore to show our community the support it deserves. Flint is trying desperately to get back onto its feet and we have taken the kids downtown a few times in the past month, and it has been great! There are a few new eateries, as well as a larger Yoga Studio and numerous shopping venues within walking distance of Pages. If you can, make a day of it next Saturday, Nov. 20th and see what downtown Flint has to offer! We will be at Pages from 1-3pm for reading, signing, eating, and fellowship! Additionally our illustrator, Rebecca Bodzick, will be there to celebrate and join us in our second endeavor. Hope to see you there!

Welcome Little Leo!

My dear friend, Rebecca Bodzick, just completed the illustrations for my second book, Welcome Little Leo.  She did an outstanding job! This story revolves around my son, Leo, and the story of his birth.  The genre is a fairy tale, complete with the scary antagonist…a hairy mole!  I am so proud of this!  Thank you Rebecca!

Groundhog’s Day!!!!!!

February has brought us to Woodstock, IL.  Can anyone guess which movie was filmed in Woodstock, IL?  If you guessed Bill Murray’s Groundhog’s Day, you’re correct!  It’s neat to see where a classic movie was filmed.  I can see images of Bill eating his heart at the local diner or stepping in that puddle over and over.  It’s been quite a wonderful time.  Thank you to Trax Depot Cafe for hosting us.  They have some of the best customer service around.

Thanks MN!

We had a terrific time at Bookworld in Detroit Lakes, MN.  Thank you for your hospitality!  We already miss our family there, but not the cold weather.  When we left it was -31 and that was not even counting the wind chill.  The snow and 26 degree heat here in MI is a little easier to handle! Next signing, Illinois.  After that we are trying to get to Long Beach, CA.  It is sunny and 70 there!!!
